Immerse yourself in the music and culture of Louisiana through our distinctive Traditional Music concentration – the only program of its kind in the state. Designed for musicians who learn by ear and love to play in community traditions, this degree gives you academic grounding and artistic fluency in Cajun, zydeco, bluegrass, and more.

Not majoring in Traditional Music but still interested in getting involved? Our ensembles, applied lessons, and courses are open to every UL Lafayette student, regardless of major.

What You'll Experience

Ear-Based Ensemble Learning 萝莉社在线影院

Join ensembles like Cajun, Zydeco, R&B and Honky Tonk – coached by working artists. Ensembles are typically chosen by audition, and open to majors and non-majors alike.

Applied Lessons by Tradition 

Receive instruction on fiddle, accordion, vocals, or banjo through group-based, vernacular-style learning settings open to music majors and non-majors alike.

Scholarly & Cultural Coursework 

Dive into courses on World Music, Cajun/Zydeco history, songwriting, and roots-based ethnomusicology – enhancing your cultural understanding, and preparing you for leadership in community arts.

Performance Opportunities

Perform regularly in public settings with your ensemble, from downtown Lafayette venues to the Louisiana Folk Roots Stage at Festival International, and take the music into the community through school outreach performances.

Internships & Career Experience

Take on part-time work at the Center for Louisiana Studies or with KRVS 88.7 FM Radio Acadie

This concentration pairs ear-based learning with academic grounding in Cajun and Acadian culture. This track is ideal for singers and instrumentalists who want to preserve and perform vernacular music traditions, whether as music majors or lifelong learners. All students with a passion for roots-based music are welcome.

Audition & Enrollment

  • Auditions are required to join the B.A. concentration or any ensemble, typically held each fall and spring (dates posted annually)
  • You don't need to be pursuing the B.A. to audition for an ensemble or take applied lessons
  • Accepted BA students may qualify for traditional music scholarships and ensemble awards
